Consumed by Media

Media is everywhere and constantly surrounding us. It changes our thoughts and our actions in ways we don't even always realize. I love this video by the team at Miss Representation and had to share it.
I find that I have to just say no to picking up and leafing through most fashion magazines. I instead look at the world around me for inspiration, with all the diversity that it presents. I surround myself by those who refuse to include "fat talk" in their life, and quickly squash any comments of "i feel so fat today" that i hear around me.

What are you doing to change your relationship with media? To maintain a high self esteem when surround by unrealistic images?

Appreciate yourself

Someone said something to me earlier this week that got me thinking. He said, "Life is good. I'm happier than I have ever been. So why do I complain? It's time to start appreciating everything I have - which is a lot. So I'm making today a no-complain day, and I'll try to do the same every day after that."

I'm pretty sure he was talking about a long day at work, but it got me thinking about body appreciation. Hearing him say these things got me thinking about my own sense of appreciation for the gifts I have been granted in life. For example, my physical strength is something I rarely give thanks for but it's something that's really important to me. My legs can carry me miles, my arms can lift my nieces and nephews, and my brain power can work overtime to help me understand and produce important work.

Our bodies are what carry us through life and also give life to others. That's pretty amazing. It's time we reverse the trend and start appreciating them for what they can do rather than bashing them for what they don't do or look like. If you are reading this, please comment below with at least ONE thing you appreciate about your body today. And then carry that thought with you throughout the day. I bet it will put a smile on your face!
